Role of Risk & Reliability in Design and Maintenance
The subject of risk and reliability has an important role in the design and future maintenance of structures including bridges. Ensuring safety and performance over the useful life of any structure are mainly the responsibilities of engineers. In this regard, because of unavoidable uncertainties in the loadings and capacities (current and future), assurance of complete safety and performance is not possible; there is always some chance (i.e., probability) of non-performance and/or failure, and thus some risk. Consequently, consideration of risk and reliability is important during the design and subsequent maintenance of the structure.

Described here are the basic and practical tools for implementing risk and reliability in bridge engineering. The concepts and tools are illustrated with examples.
